polar - a dance of contrary energies
‘Polar – A dance of contrary energies’ was exhibited at Richard Martin Art in 2007. Craig’s expressive and emotive free flow line work in ink and charcoal takes centre stage in this collection which celebrates the unique relationships between couples and pairs for the first time in his oeuvre. Largely inspired by Craig’s close personal friendships and bonds, the works were undertaken as he prepared to move to South America.
In these large canvases, Craig allows for more open space and sharper contrast than in his earlier works, allowing for further reflection and a continuing story with his subjects. The exhibition explores the opposing energies that generate life itself and in each piece Craig captures the energy, spirit, and unique essence of his subjects, celebrating the true beauty and life force that lies within every one of us. The studies of particular subjects posing in different positions in the same work, represents motion and growth, exploring the different sides and personalities of a particular person and friend.
“All life is made up of dual forces, polarities holding in place opposite aspects of the same central force. Masculine and feminine, day and night, activity and passivity, all life operates through these opposing forces,” Craig Ruddy.
